Big box retail be damned, because you better believe you won’t find bar codes or “Made in China” stickers at the 38th annual Lakeside invitational Craft & Art Show July 28 through 30 at Hotel Lakeside in Marblehead. However, because it’s a juried show it also means something you will find is quality. Or so says Show Director Shirley Tatlock.
“It’s handmade arts and crafts, and it’s a juried show,” Tatlock said. “When they submit their applications, they have to send in pictures of what they do, as well as their set-up.
We want to make sure what we have is all handmade. This year I have 70 crafters doing fine arts, handmade clothing, quilts, some knitted items, jewelry, wood and photography. I’m always on the lookout for new people. I have a gentleman from Sandusky doing art flower boxes using old tires. We have a lot of woodworking things. We have hand-turned wood and also hand-turned pottery.”
Annually scheduled to coincide with the Lakeside Parade of Homes event, the Craft & Art Show normally attracts roughly 2,000 people daily, who have to pay a $3 gate fee at Lakeside for a four-hour shopping pass.
“I think it’s very beneficial to Lakeside, Ohio because it brings a lot of people in who don’t know what’s going on there,” Tatlock said. “It’s always been successful. We have some people who have been coming for quite a few years because they feel it is advantageous to them to sell at this event. I don’t seem to have a problem finding crafters. The word of mouth goes around at different festivals and they call us for applications.”
Tatlock suggests that the Lakeside Crafts & Art Show is on par with a similar large Buckeye State event, the Attica Show, which took place a few weeks ago. The biggest difference she points out is some of the attendees and vendors actually stay at Lakeside, thus boosting the tourism of the area.
Whereas most events boast something for everyone, Tatlock points out the location of the Lakeside Craft & Art Show inherently accomplishes such a goal.
“If they don’t like the crafts, they’re right by the lake,” Tatlock said. “So they can go swimming or boating or whatever.”
Ah, it sounds like Tatlock is saying the ladies in the house will enjoy the craft show, while their husbands or significant others could find something else equally appealing to do at Lakeside.
She laughed, “That’s right.”
