Calling all disciples of Home & Garden Television’s crafting wizard Carol Duvall: the first free Spring Craft Bazaar takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 30 at the American Legion Post in Sandusky.

No, the popular craft lady of television won’t be in attendance, but nearly two dozen creative-minded vendors will be selling their wares, which range from jewelry and candy to pottery, baby items, wreaths and centerpieces. One person not only attending but also organizing the event is sewing crafter Robin Vazquez.

“I started about two years ago because I wanted to learn something and my mom had done it for years,” said Vazquez, a 1995 Norwalk High School graduate. “She’s not always going to be around, so I wanted to be able to carry on what she does. Also, it’s my understanding with the tough economic times, crafting is becoming more popular. People are trying to figure out how to get stuff, make it for themselves and possibly sell it to others to supplement their income because people need to do that now.”

The impetus behind the Spring Craft Bazaar was to create a fundraiser with all proceeds going towards Breast Cancer Awareness and NOMS 3-Day-Race-for-a-Cure Team.

“The reason we’re doing it is myself and two other ladies are walking in the Susan G. Komen Walk in Cleveland,” Vazquez said. “We have to raise money. Also, NOMS (Northern Ohio Medical Specialists) has their women’s center that’s going to be at the event handing out information.”

Vazquez is hopeful people taking in the Spring Craft Bazaar will leave with more than just homemade crafts and such.

“Hopefully it’ll raise even more awareness for breast cancer and what’s going on in the community,” Vazquez said. “Also, I hope they realize how breast cancer can affect one person, who then affects so many other people.”
