It’s a murder-mystery-comedy-thriller! With that said, it’s safe to assume that “Out of Sight, Out of Murder” — presented by Harlequins Theatre beginning April 29 — has something for everyone.
Peter Knight, played by Cody Noon, is an author on a deadline ensconced in a spooky old mansion on a dark and stormy night, where another author was murdered years before. All the classic elements are in place, including a clap of thunder, and when lightning strikes, the lights go out and zingo! — a bizarre cosmic reaction brings his characters to life.
If that isn’t startling enough, the title of the book Peter is writing is “Death of an Author” - and he soon realizes that one of his own creations is out to murder him. Peter has literally brought to life all the standard characters - the breathtaking ingénue, the proper butler, the spinster, the always pregnant maid, the rich femme fatale, the dashing hero and the smarmy lawyer - all with the same agenda: money and murder. Falling vases, switched drinks and poisoned peppermints kill off the characters one by one. Add in the caretaker’s wife (who cannot see nor hear any of Peter’s “friends”) and the ominous becomes humorous.
“It’s a fun and intriguing show,” said Jennifer Wertz, who plays Minna, the caretaker’s wife.
Valerie Thames portrays the rich femme fatale. “We have a lot of new faces in this cast and we’re having a blast!” she said. “We’re excited about getting the younger actors in our area involved with Harlequins - the more the merrier.”
