Top five things to do this weekend

Ashley Bethard • May 12, 2015 at 6:28 PM

This weekend, it's all about trying to embrace spring — and giving back to your community. We've got two huge benefit dinners that raise money for great causes, a workshop that will get you back into the garden and of course, the "official" kick off of racing season. Let's hope the weather holds up!

1.)    Recycling: See How It’s Done

Why you should go: With Erie County recently closing our own recycling center, reducing our carbon footprint is more important than ever. You can see how Allied Waste processes its recyclables on Earth Day and see what deals they have going on, so we can continue to recycle.

WHEN: 9 a.m.-12 p.m. April 22

WHERE: Allied Waste North America, 4005 Tiffin Ave., Sandusky

COST: Free

INFO: 419-626-2454

2.)    Herb Garden Workshop

Why you should go: Who doesn’t want fresh herbs? Create an organic herb garden with Mill Hollow Nursery as they guide you through the selection, planting and care of herbs at the Carriage Barn. Bring your own container (with drainage) or purchase one from a unique assortment. Registration required. All plants and extra materials can be purchased in the class. Bring your own gloves.

WHEN: 2-4 p.m. April 23

WHERE: Carriage Barn at Vermilion River Reservation, 51211 North Ridge Road, Vermilion

3.)    Noemi Gebhardt Benefit

Why you should go: Noemi, a 34-year-old RN at Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk, was found to have a heart murmur in an early 2011 checkup. It was determined that she has a large tumor in the right side of her heart, between the right atrium and right ventricle. In the meantime, her colleagues from FTMC Emergency Department are holding a benefit in her honor. There will be a spaghetti dinner, silent auction, raffles of many prizes, gift baskets and live entertainment from Wasted Knights.

WHEN: 4-10 p.m. April 23

WHERE: Norwalk VFW, 140 Milan Ave., Norwalk

COST: Free to enter

4.)    Spaghetti Dinner & Auction for Dunn

Why you should go: There will be a spaghetti dinner and silent auction for the late Officer Andrew Dunn. Auction will close at 7 p.m. They will be featuring Barone’s famous spaghetti sauce, and baked goods will be for sale. Carry out is available. All proceeds go to benefit Officer Dunn’s family.

WHEN: 5-8 p.m. April 23
