As co-founder of The Ritz Theatre’s resident dance collective trideaDANCE, Kathy Miller is quite familiar with the glazed-over look some people get when trying to understand exactly what her group does. Take, for instance, the collective’s new show “Moving Connections,” which is scheduled for an April 16 performance at The Ritz Theatre.
The energetic dance explores how people connect (or not) with strangers in transit, in close quarters and the common experiences they might share.
There’s also Miller’s own “Who’s There, Who’s Here,” featuring the visionary joined by local dancers Katie Rustemeyer, Rena Song, Victoria Wurm, Sarah Brown and Maddy Utz.
“The idea behind that piece was actually a study in movement in birds and especially owls,” Miller said. “We came up with a set of gestures and movements that were very birdlike, and we manipulated those movements and made them move and flow together. So that piece is light and airy, and it’s also kind of communal. The girls are playing with being with each other in a group and exploring a space individually and as a group.”
Miller stresses while “Moving Connections” is targeted towards lovers of dance, neophytes (i.e., dutiful husbands and boyfriends in attendance) need not be worried about having to sit through an evening of watching men in tights frolic around the stage.
“No, no guys in tights,” Miller laughed. “The show has stuff that is humorous and intentionally funny, and then for others there are moments that are emotionally involved. Also, this is not ballet, classical dance and ballroom dancing. It’s just an adventure, connecting with people through movement.”
