Getting the Early Bird Party started for the 2011 season is the idea April 9 at The Village Pump on Kelleys Island.
“The ferries finally started up and it’s our first kick-off event of the year,” said Village Pump owner Gary Finger. “We put out food and games and prizes and do a live broadcast with WLKR’s Nick Vincent. We’ve been doing this party for at least 15 years.”
The spring fling of sorts usually attracts 300 to 400 people, which Finger said is comprised mostly of Island and other area locals looking to catch up with friends after a long winter. So attendance-wise, the Early Bird Party is definitely less than a normal summer day for the Kelleys Island venerable establishment, which is open March through December.
Still, Finger promises those who attend won’t leave disappointed. "It’s always just a great time to get the season started,” Finger said. “Nick Vincent hosts the games. Usually he does contests and trivia and things like bologna tossing.”
Even though deli-meat throwing may be viewed as adult-type stuff, the proprietor promises the entire event is family friendly.
“It’s just a great place to socialize,” Finger said. “We have a full food menu and a good bar. We’re known for our perch and our frozen Brandy Alexanders. We’ve been family operated for over 50 years.”
Finally, as a longtime resident of Kelleys Island, Finger said the popular Lake Erie vacation spot has
maintained its charm.
“As much as it’s changed, Kelleys Island really just stayed the same,” Finger said. “It’s still a nice community of people, with some new families that have now bought homes up here. So it makes a nice interesting mix of people from all over the country, actually.”
The Early Bird Party begins at noon April 9 at The Village Pump, 103 Lakeshore Dr., Kelleys Island. Call 419-746-2281 or visit villagepump.com.
