Hundreds of people standing in line. Massive crowds shouldering their way to the pizza vendors. Sound good? We thought so, too. That’s why we were at Lyman Harbor last night for the 12th annual Sandusky Rotary Pizza Challenge.
Vendors came from Sandusky, Perkins and Huron to participate in a delicious event that also raises funds for the Sandusky Rotary’s community work.
“It’s about raising money for our Rotary Clothes Kids program,” said event co-chair Rick Jeffrey. “This event brings about 75% of the money we need during the Christmas time for kids. We spend $100 to $125 for kids’ clothes through Christmas, and we are trying to do about 125 kids each year,” he said.
Everyone at the Rotary Pizza Challenge had the option to vote on their favorite pizza, whether it was a dine-in or carry-out pie. The official judges were divided into testing groups for specialty and pepperoni, and each judge tried 13 different slices.
“I like the fact that people get out and can taste every vendor’s product and try pizza they never had before,” Jeffrey said.
Richard Cutlip came all the way from Michigan to see and support his Rotary friends — and to try some Ohio pizza. So is it better than Michigan pizza?
“I like chicken alfredo pizza, and every vendor does a good job,” Cutlip said. “It’s hard to tell. This event is a great opportunity to meet people from the area, raise some money and to eat good food with your friends and family.”
Mark Anthony Garcia from Sandusky is a big fan of the Pie Factory.
“It’s the best pizza so far,” said Garcia. “I love their pepperoni pizza. I tried all of them, but this one is the best. People are great, the atmosphere is awesome, everybody is in a good mood and I’m happy that I could help get some clothes for kids.”
The 12th annual Sandusky Rotary Pizza Challenge raised about $8,500 for their Clothes for Kids program.
