Port Clinton Playmakers will be home to an exotic bloodsucking plant known as Audrey II when they present the musical “Little Shop of Horrors” beginning March 17. Though many are more familiar with the movie of the same name, which boasts stars such as Steve Martin, John Candy, Rick Moranis and Bill Murray, the off Broadway production began several years earlier.

The story centers on a down-and-out skid row floral assistant Seymour and his co-worker Audrey, on whom he has a secret crush. After a sudden eclipse of the sun, Seymour discovers a weird plant which he names Audrey II. Eventually Seymour discovers the plant’s lust for human blood, and as Audrey II flourishes, people start disappearing.

“I like the role of Seymour,” said actor Kyle Kunard. “(I’m) having fun with all of it.” “Little Shop of Horrors” is considered to be sci-fi, black comedy, satire, spoof and musical all rolled into one eclectic cult classic. It’s almost hard to believe that Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, the songwriting team that created the music for Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” and “Aladdin,” also came up with “Little Shop of Horror” staples such as “Feed Me,” “Skid Row” and “Suddenly Seymour.”

The dance numbers, which feature a conga line and a pseudo tango, aren’t too extravagant. “Luckily, I have some degree of latitude with Seymour being a klutz,” said Kunard.

By the end, Audrey II reveals itself to be an alien creature seeking world domination. However, the movie and the musical do not end the same, so plan on some surprises.

Performances are at 7 p.m. March 17-19 and 24-26 and at 2 p.m. March 20 and 27. Tickets are $15. For reservations and tickets, call 419-734-5044.

On March 20, Playmakers will have a special promotion where kids will get in for $10 if accompanied by an adult paying full price. Kids will also get to have their picture taken with Audrey II after the show for free.
