Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fairy tale “The Ugly Duckling” is now a musical. “Honk!” will be performed at Edison High School on March 10-13. For those unfamiliar with the tale, it centers on a less-than-cute duckling who is rejected because of the way he looks.

Though it’s based on a fairy tale, “Honk!” can be appreciated by both kids and adults. Young people will enjoy the interesting animal characters, the musical’s quick pace and some of the silly dance numbers. The adults will understand the subtle underlying implications.

“If you listen to the words of the music, you’ll get the deeper meaning,” said director Rex Stanforth. “It’s not about just becoming better looking. (Ugly) earns the respect of the other barnyard fowl.”

There have been quite a few extra challenges for the Edison students participating in the production. “I am pleased at how they’ve adjusted to the changes in cast and the (temporary) loss of their choreographer,” said Stanforth. Most of the dance numbers had been choreographed before choreographer Tony Fryman suffered an injury.

Rather than hire someone else, the students took it upon themselves to create the rest of the dance numbers on their own. So while “Warts and All” may be their favorite dance number, they’re equally proud of what they accomplished when putting together the dance moves for “Blizzard.”

The students also created their own costumes with the help of some parents. “The original concept (for the show) was to have people with animal-like characteristics,” said Stanforth.

The musical was originally suggested by a drama club officer, and while most were initially skeptical about performing a fairy tale, the students quickly recognized the humor in it and knew audiences would love it as well. Character names such as Billy, Beaky, Downy Fluff, Greylag and Lowbutt should be a dead giveaway that “Honk!” is unique and a bit goofy.

“Honk!” will be at 7:30 p.m. March 10-12 and 2 p.m. March 13. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 419-499-4652 ext. 1080. Tickets are $6 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens.
