• WHAT: 2nd Annual Cooks of Cardinal’s Chili Cook-Off

• WHEN: 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 19

• WHERE: Cardinal Grocery, 317 E. Washington St., Sandusky

• COST: Free

What originally began as good-natured bantering and bragging about the cooking prowess of various Cardinal Grocery employees has blossomed — or, um, expanded — into a Chili Cook-Off taking place Feb. 19 at the downtown Sandusky store.

“I’m the best cook around here,” said Cardinal Grocery Manager Chet “Butch” Sinwald. “It’s kind of a takeoff on the Firemen’s Chili Cook-Off. We thought we all have good chili too, and decided to have our own chili cook-off. It’s kind of like a customers’ appreciation and also voting on the best chili. It’s for bragging rights.”

Funcoast talked to the four employees about the second annual no-beans-barred event. Here’s a quick sample of what hungry folks can expect.

Marie Kaiser, Meat Department Manager

• Do you have a strategy for your chili?

My strategy for this year is I’m going to make the same stuff I made last year, which is my basic homemade family recipe. I just make it the same as I do all of the time. I put three different kinds of beans in it and three different kinds of meats. But I don’t want to tell you my secret.

• Did you train for the event?

Oh yeah, we make chili all through the winter months. All of our friends love it.

•How did you prepare?

I don’t need to. My chili speaks for itself.

• Finish the following: “Beans, beans the musical fruit…”

“…compose your own tune, you won’t need a flute!”

Chet “Butch” Sinwald, Cardinal Grocery Manager

• Do you have a strategy for your chili?

My strategy is sweet. So my chili is called  Butch’s Sweet and Special.

• Did you train for the event?

I don’t train. I just make my chili. I always try to improve it a little bit at a time. I came in third place last year. I’m planning on winning first place this year with a new and improved recipe.

• How did you prepare?

I tried to make it better. We had some

suggestions from customers last year. So I’m taking that into consideration too.

• Finish the following: “Beans, beans the musical fruit…”

“…with Butch’s Sweet Chili the less you’ll toot!”

Nicole McCowan, cashier

• Do you have a strategy for your chili?

I wasn’t in the event last year, I just tasted the chili. So mine was just to come up with a recipe that is better than theirs. I think my chili is unique because I put some little secret recipe touches in it.

• Did you train for the event?

I’ve been training a little bit making small batches at home to see what I can come up with.

• How did you prepare?

I’m doing a lot of research on the Internet and just trying different kinds to put something real nice together.

• Finish the following: “Beans, beans the musical fruit…”

“…try my chili and it will warm you up just right!”

Adriana Sinwald, cashier

• Do you have a strategy for your chili?

Just trying to do something different, a type of chili that no one will expect.

• Did you train for the event?

Not really (laughs). Just for the last few weeks.

• How did you prepare?

Just trying different meats and spices to put in the chili. It’s sweet and spicy at the same time.

• Finish the following: “Beans, beans the musical fruit…”

“…vote Adri’s chili the best, absolute!”
