4 things to do this weekend

As we launch into the heart of winter, area events keep rolling with lectures, shows and other cozy, mostly-indoor activities. Keep busy, keep warm and settle into a nice, relatively quiet weekend.

Astronomy: Cold, Thin MoonIt’s a great big universe, and we’re all really puny, so take this opportunity to get a glimpse of a small part of it. The moon is the closest celestial body to us, but it’s easy to forget about it. Discuss and observe the moon and other things in the wintry night sky, and expand upon your already vast body of knowledge.

Common Houseplant Care – When you’ve given them sunlight and dirt but they’ve given you nothing but heartache and hurt, it’s time to talk to the professionals. Doling out advice on all sorts of common houseplants, this brief discussion will educate and inform all in attendance about the care and keeping of your favorite houseplants. Your screaming mandrake plant may raise a few eyebrows, and your “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”-style pod might scare a person or two, but other than that, everything is fair game for conversation.

Historical Program Series – Did you know Johnson’s Island was a Confederate prison during the Civil War? Me neither! Apparently, the Union army needed someplace to keep their prisoners of war, and the island was isolated enough and far enough from the battlefront to serve as an ideal prison. The Sandusky Maritime Museum is hosting a free, complete lecture on the subject, and by the end, you’ll be able to teach a class about it. Or at least get one or two more questions right during Trivial Pursuit.

"Title TBD: An Improvised Musical" – I would tell you what it’s about, but no one knows for sure. Drawing upon suggestions from the audience, the cast of “Title TBD” makes up an entire musical on the spot. Every word, every note, every action onstage is completely improvised with no exceptions. They’ve performed “Rebuilding! The Musical,” “Everyone Needs A Diary: The Musical” and others along the same wacky strain. I mean, just listen to that on-the-spot lyricism in “Everyone Needs a Diary”! It’s unique, it’s energetic, and it’s going to be an unforgettable night. You would be foolish to miss it.
