Getting an early start to celebrating New Year’s Eve is the simple but fun idea behind The Merry-Go-Round Museum’s annual Toast of the Town affair, which takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 31 at the Go Coast tourist destination.

“It’s an opportunity for folks from the community to greet the New Year in a low-key way while still having a terrific amount of fun,” said The Merry-Go-Round Museum Executive Director Veronica Vanden Bout. “It’s adult beverages, carousel rides and a silent auction with some great items  — everything from a spa package to a handcrafted Adirondack chair to a family game night basket and boat dockage for a year. The food is always fantastic. It’s from local restaurants. And live music, we have Christian Kaiser performing during the event. It’s just not one of those wild and crazy things. It’s a chance to visit, talk to friends and enjoy the New Year’s Eve.”

Perhaps on the surface the Toast of the Town event may seem like an early bird special for those folks not looking to be out and about when the clock strikes 2011. However, Vanden Bout uses her own personal experience to dispel such a notion.

“Actually what it is for a lot of folks, including folks like me, is a lead-up to the next party,” Vanden Bout said. “It’s like the pre-party party. Some people would rather be home before the craziness begins and other people just want a way to have a little quieter start to their evening, so they’ll do this party. They might not stay the whole time but then they go and have a dinner out or they head to the next party or they head to a club.”

The Toast of the Town event is a fundraiser for The Merry-Go-Round Museum and Sandusky Main Street Association. While the exact dollar figure of money raised varies from year to year, the executive director said it’s important to not only kicking off the year in a fun fashion but also bringing people into the museum.

Furthermore, Vanden Bout said the diverse group of people attending the Toast of the Town adds to its appeal.

“I’m always surprised at the wide range of folks who come,” Vanden Bout said. “There will be some folks here with kids, some older folks and all of us in the middle where we’re going to do something else but it’s a great way to just kick off New Year’s Eve. And at $15 per person, it’s really a good deal for whoever attends the party. That’s your food, wine, live music. It’s just a great time.”
