Putting the “Boo” in booze cruise is the idea for the Jet Express’ special excursions to Kelleys Island from its Sandusky dock on Oct. 23. The “Boo Cruise” sets sail with a full cash bar and snacks during its leisurely 45-minute party tour through Sandusky Bay, before kicking it up full speed for Kelleys Island.

“This is our first time we’ve offered a couple of bonus weekends out of Sandusky since we’ve been running out of there,” said Jet Express Director of Operations Lance Woodworth. “It’s two separate cruises out to Kelleys Island from downtown Sandusky. The idea is to get out and enjoy it while the boat is there and the islands are open, because it’s going to be a long, cold winter. It’ll be about six months before the boats are running again.”

He added, “The big thing with Oct. 23 is that’s when Kelleys Island celebrates Halloween. That’s when their downtown establishments will be decorated.”

The impetus for the “Boo Cruise” is to give Halloween lovers a chance to experience the Kelleys Island seasonal fun with two different cruises. The first departs at 6 p.m. and returns at 11:50 p.m., and the second leaves at 8 p.m. and returns at 1:50 a.m.

“It’s just a unique twist to celebrate the holiday,” Woodworth said. “In the summertime, jumping on the boats and island hopping is so popular that it’s just kind of transferred over to the fall in celebrating this holiday. We got that demand so we decided to throw this trip on there and see how it goes. We’ve never run past the middle of September out of Sandusky.”

Jet Express is also extending its service to Halloween weekend with runs to Put-in-Bay for people to celebrate the holiday on South Bass Island. Perhaps the only question remaining is whether or not costumes are required.

“It’s not required,” Woodworth said, “but the vast majority of people will be in costume, so those who aren’t in costume will be the ones left out of the fun.”

So will Woodworth be wearing a costume?

“I imagine I’ll dig something out,” he said. “Maybe I’ll be a pirate, that’s pretty original.”

 Will it be Captain Morgan?

“Probably not. That won’t be apropos since I’ll be working,” Woodworth laughed. “It’ll probably be more along the lines of the Johnny Depp character from ‘Pirates of the Caribbean.’”
