Sandusky city manager Matt Kline<br />

In Dan Kaman's opinion, interim city managers Don Miears and Don Icsman — who had no previous experience as city manager — did or have done "great jobs."

But professional city managers like Mike Will and Matt Kline? Not so much.

Because of that, Sandusky's ex officio mayor hopes the city commission thinks creatively when choosing its next leader.

I actually get a charge out of Columbus Ave.

It's those kinds of folks that keep SOSP and myself  trudging forward to protect the public's waterfront from the likes of Mr Eymann and even the 100 year old Sandusky Yacht Club---a Private Club that in 2001 agreed , in writing, to not ask for more of the public's water rights.

This is actually a thankless, never ending task my hero and Father Don Schwanger started some 40 years ago fighting private enterprise at Battery Park over fences placed to keep the public off OUR public piers. He fought hard to improve the East Wall at Battery Park.

I wear the Schwangerites moniker proud and encourage Columbus Ave. and his comrades to continue to blog.

Perhaps they could make one change---stop acting like a broken record and start offering suggestions how we can protect our remaining public waterfront from get rich quick con-artists.

Hey, "Columbus Ave", I notice that you did not challenge any of the FACTS that I presented.  You just launch into your usual name calling.  Tim and others in Save Our Shoreline Parks do a LOT of leading and volunteering in this town.

Furthermore, unlike you, I put my name on my posts, and take full responsibility for their accuracy.

Do you really think it's peachy keen for your tax dollars to support "developers" who refuse to provide background information?

To be fair to Mike Will, he was by no means the only local official who fell for the Eymann hustle.  You can add everyone who was on the city commission in 2008, as well as Sandusky Proud.  All of them owe Tim an apology.  It's really ridiculous to try to blame Tim and SOSP for the fact that Eymann was not what he claimed to be, and that so many in this town fell for the charade.

In fact, I think the unraveling Marina District fiasco was the reason Mr. Will left the city manager's position.  Look what happened to Matt Kline when he tried to keep it going in spite of mounting evidence that the deal was going way south.

I hereby nominate "columbus ave" as the "Whispering Coward".

Once again Dan Kaman is making ridiculoous comments. That guy and Waddington need to shut up .Apparently they are grooming Iccman for the job which would be a huge mistake that would match that huge salary they gave him.  He makes more money than any person in that position has ever made. Right, he is doing some other work as law director-most of which he farms out to outside lawyers. He has it made. Does nobody recall the terms of his contract? He receives 1/2% raise for each month he serves as the interim city manager in the event he returns to his former position as law dirsector. As of now he is at 10 months which means he will get a 5% raise if he goes back to his old job. It could very well be that the city would pay Iccman more as a law director than the new city manager. Hmmmmm.. He is only looking at this to increase his final salary before he retires in a couple years.  If the city hires him as city manager will he take a pay cut?

It makes no difference who the city manager is if the 7 commissioners refuse to let the manager do the job. Maybe they all need to review the city charter for duties of city commissioners vs. duties of city manager. I think the problem lies with the commissioners and not the city managers. I am all for recalling some commissioners.

Iccman talks about accountability. Exactly how many hours is he working per week to earn that salary? He also says he worked outside govt. What did he do? Mike Will's experience was outside govt. so according to Kaman's comment Mike would have been an excellent manager. Kaman is now saying the opposite.

While Matt Kline was inept and had questionable ethics, I think Mike Will did a good job as city manager.

To rule out hiring a professional manager is foolish.   Who do you hire to fix your car?  cut your hair?  prepare your taxes?   Trained, experienced professionals.

Gutter sniping at Mike Will is uncalled for, Mr. Kaman.

I thought Mike Will and Matt Kline did an excellent job.   They would have done wonders for this city if some would have JUST THEM DO "THEIR' JOB.

Julie R,

Don't tell us you believe the Schwangerites self-serving agenda?

If it were up to them there wouldn't Sandusky just be a no nothing except "sightlines"...looking at nothing staring backwards to some fantasy rose-colored "glory days" of Sandusky's past?

Ever notice how these guys always bring up the negative and attack people in authority trying their best to do a thankless job?

Have you ever seen any of them stepping up to the plate to run for any of these offices?  And you won't!  They just want to grouse from the sidelines.

Mike Will was really negligent in failing to do any reasonable sort of background check on John Eymann - the "promoter" of the Marina District.  It eventually emerged that Eymann had never developed anything and had no equity to invest.  Mike Will was ready to give Eymann the right to put up giant condo towers in two shoreline parks, and stick the taxpayers with a twenty million dollar bill while refusing repeated requests by the public to see Eymann's resume.  The city narrowly averted a disaster - no thanks to Mike Will.

Had Mike Will still been the city manager you can bet the expensive Nuesse saga never would have taken place................and I still say Matt Kline was used as the scapegoat. The village idiots didn't care if they ruined his reputation and career any more than they cared if they ruined Kim Nuesse's. And by village idiots I'm referring to the ones in the legal system that have the power to bring in the rent-a-judges for all their personal agendas.

A few random comments:

Mike Will was a finance manager at a car dealership before being hired.

Miears came from CP and no one wanted to rock the boat with the cash cow.

Icsman is one of the good ol boys and knows all the inside secrets. No one wants to get on his bad side because he will spill the dirt on them.

Kline was a jerk and did much to put this city in the hole we're currently in.

This town has had the city manager form of government for well over 50 years. I can't believe in all that time they've never had a written job description.

There is a major difference between business administration and public administration. I think this city should be wary of going too far across the lines of distinction.

Well of course the "Interim" city managers would have done a fine job according to the commisioners, they are just that "Interim" and would do what ever the commisioners wanted.  The commisioners (some of them) don't like the "Professional" city managers, because they were hired to run the city and that is what the commisioners want to do.  Why don't Kaman or Waddington apply for city manager, those two seem to think they run the city anyway.   I don't see why we need a city manager, when sometimes it seems like we already have seven of them!!!!!!

definitely agree with your post.  I have to laugh every time I see negative comments about Mike Will.  I went to school and worked with him, and the guy is smart, hard working, dedicated, passionate, etc.  Everything i would look for if hiring for almost any position.  Successful people like Mike are successful in any situation/position you put them in.  If he can't get the job done, there has to be some other problems.  I'll bet he was highly successful before he was a city manager and with whatever he's doing now.  Those hiring for this position need to look at themselves and figure out what is wrong.  I think someone would have to be crazy to even want this position now.  With all of the drama that comes with this position, why not just do what Mike did and go make more money elsewhere without the stress and drama that comes with this position.

I feel that many of these searches go wrong because the search committee places emphasis on experience rather than the ability to manage people, relationship, and the ability to make good decisions.

I didn't realize Mike Will was a professional city manager when he was hired.  Didn't he have a different background?

When it is said that the two previous city managers didn’t do very well - - was it “just them” or could there have been other factors? I feel that when my team members (employees) don’t do very well, I need to look inwardly at myself and consider if there was anything I could do to enhance the situation. One way or another, it would be my responsibility. Either - - I don’t know how to hire good people - - or - - I don’t know how to lead them. As leaders, we must conduct a self-check when our team members don’t do very well in the positions we hired them for.

I think this could be true for the City Commission and City Manager relationship. As unique as it is, it is still and employer-employee relationship. It is easy to place the blame upon the employee. But, we are all intelligent enough to know if the City Manager does a stellar job, his/her employer will take credit for hiring the right person and leading them. But, if they fail, the employer turns their head, places blame, and doesn’t take any of the responsibility.  Not only are we managing emotions of human beings, but a great deal of hypocrisy as well.

Inasmuch as we want the City to “hire right” and hope they conduct an intensive background, it would behoove the interviewee/prospective City Manager to conduct an investigation of their own...they should know who they are working for too. If they do this, and are still willing to take the job, I think it will be a better fit in the long run. It isn’t just about the City hiring the right person - - that person needs to understand the culture of this town and of the City Commission. In both situations...caveat emptor.
