Special Agent Ed Biederstedt of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation dusts a flower urn for prints at the McPherson Cemetery in Clyde on Monday after vandals damaged the cemetery three times in a week. The headstone marks the grave of Rodger W. Young, a Medal of Honor recipient from World War II.

The reward has climbed to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of vandals who desecrated more than 170 graves in Clyde.

That's double the reward offered Monday. Clyde police Chief Bruce Gower said businesses and community members upped the ante.

Police are investigating vandalism that started Aug. 24 at McPherson Cemetery and culminated in a broad assault on grave sites late Sunday or early Monday.

The vandals destroyed flower arrangements, snapped American flags and destroyed or damaged dozens of gravestones, some more than 150 years old.

Police are asking for any information that will help in the investigation. They're offering the $5,000 reward to anyone who can point them to the culprits.

The city, meanwhile, is still dealing with the cleanup.

City manager Paul Fiser said insurance adjusters are still working on the city's claim.

While damaged flower pots and other items have already been removed, dozens of felled gravestones won't be fixed until the agency is finished with an estimate.

Police guessed the cost of damage will exceed $100,000.

"Some of the time, the old sandstone ones, can't even be replaced," Fiser said.

There is some hope, however, that at least some items can be pieced together and held with piping.

The city hopes to hear back from the insurance company and start getting the cemetery back in order by the week's end.

Tip line

Anyone with information on the vandalism is asked to call Clyde police at 419-547-9555. There is now a $5,000 reward for anyone providing information leading to the arrest of the vandals.

I still say it starts in the home and from birth.  You can't all of a sudden start trying to teach a kid anything when they reach 4 or 5 years of ago. The sad part is that most of these "parents" weren't taught anything either.

I am praying very hard that the ones that did the damage will be caught soon.  People from all over Ohio are sending in donations for the reward, somebody is going to want that money and hopefully will rat them out.

Anoyher fine example, the foundation starts in the home, this is where the most criticle partof our learning begins, a kid doesnt just pick up values and morals, and self worth in a class room. Parents and family need to get more involved, and the courts should stop dictating the methods of discipline in the home. Whatever happened to good ole as* woopins? I got plenty of them and im still here to talk about it, and many of the older generations did also. As a matter of fact this is the same generation that is sayin not to whoop the kids now. And they wonder why theese kids do things that we never would have dreamed of in our day.

Its rough out here, jus tryn to make it.

Simply awful. What kind of satisfaction can someone get from vandalizing a cemetery.

I look forward to these dipsh*ts being caught/identified. We went to Clyde a few weeks ago to visit McPherson and get pictures. It's a realy nice place. Our family has over 20 known family members buried there with some dating back to the mid 1800's. I cant believe it happened at this cemetery that's so out in the open. right on the highway / main road.

I give great credit to the people of Clyde for offering a $5,000 reward for the arrest of the person or people responsible.

It makes me sick to live in Sandusky and know they are only offering a $2,000 reward for the arrest of person or persons responsible for shooting up the city.

It is sad when a cemetery is damaged and I hope they catch the responsible party or parties. It will be even more disturbing when someone is shot and killed in Sandusky because nobody wants to help catch the guilty for $2,000, knowing the can turn in someone destroying a cemetery and get $5,000 or they ware waiting for the reward to go up.

There is something SERIOUSLY wrong with this picture.

This is very sad.. the people responsible for this should get the maximum punishment they can get! Its bad enough people have to grieve for their family and friends at the time of death and now they have to worry if their place of rest is going to be disturbed?? It takes a sick person to mess with the deceased!! And karma will catch up to them.. Who is responsible for replacing broken headstones? The family that have already paid for them?

If anyone had any information about this, they wouldn't be able to call the right people anyways, since the phone number printed in this article is incorrect. It should read 419-547-9555.
