It still feels like beach and theme-park weather outside, but children will head back inside next week as many local schools resume classes.

Summer has drawn to a close for Berlin-Milan Schools students, who start school Monday. Clyde-Green Springs Schools, which has construction projects to finish up, will be the last to resume Sept. 7.

Retailers welcome the start of school. Planned spending on clothes and supplies for back-to-school bounced back after declining last year, according to the National Retail Federation. The average American family will spend $606.40 on clothes, shoes, supplies and electronics, up from $548.72 last year and $594.24 in 2008.

See Sunday's Register and e-paper for full schedules and need-to-know information about our area schools.

To Streak ,,,,, There are snobby people in every town. I have friends in Perkins and I assure you they are NOT snobbish.  You sure are missing out on some great garage sales !  LOL.   Dont let a few bad apples ruin your pie.

re streak: well, I am a graduate of SHS and I think your hatred is kinda silly. Why not focus that energy on helping to improve Sandusky City Schools? "Back in the day" when I was a Sandusky student, Perkins was considered a vastly inferior school, and people in Sandusky looked down their noses at Perkins Schools and Perkins Township with the same kind of "stuck up" attitude that you claim Perkins now has. What goes around comes around, Streak! Get over it.

Just responding to a post from down below. yes, I hate perkins with a passion, and the high strung/stuck up aroma that circles the township.

Streak, we can always count on you to slam Perkins whenever you can. Guess you've never gotten over the open enrollment exodus of  many Sandusky students to Perkins schools, or you're still sad about the Blue Streaks loss to the Pirates in football last year. Why not try some therapy for your obvious envy and hate issues.

You are full of hot air. Perkins is the school whose students can have 3 F's and still play sports.

Two summers back while going through Shelby their HS Cheerleaders were dressed the same-bikinis & Daisy Dukes for a car wash but looked like they were spending most of their time putting on a show for the tourists & local plow boys.

Perkins is a different story-these girls must have learned everything they know from other family members, or a Katy Perry song.

Thanksgiving is for those who appreciate what they have & give thanks for it; not for those who take & abuse the system for as much free stuff they can scam & rip off those who give thanks for having their jobs.

Streak--I suggest you lookup the phone number and give Jim Gunner a call to voice your concern. I'll call Tucker about the ineligible Sandusky football players that will be playing this year. That will give both those high paid administrators something to do.

I saw those girls in bikinis.  And it was not even hot yesterday, so don't use that excuse.  They were doing it to catch people's attention and increase their sales.  Disgraceful for teenage girls to be more naked, than clothed.....washing cars on RT 250.  Have some self respect and cover it up!  My daughter would not be running cross country if I caught her dressed like that with a coach or school rep allowing it.  What else do they allow??

Florida has a 3 day "weekend" where there is no tax on most (not all) school supplies, clothing, shoes, etc.

With the cost of running a school and the lower governmental funding, it can be extremely hard for schools.  I think it is also hard the families have to buy everything plus the basic school supplies (kleenex, anti-bacterial gel, tp, 24 glue sticks/kid).  It's hard on everyone.

The survey doesn't really say what the "average' family size it.  But you can get more detailed information at : http://www.nrf.com/modules.php?name=News&op=viewlive&sp_id=966  and it includes school supplies, clothing/shoes, and electronics.

Wow, Perkins schools sure know how to raise money. Did anyone see the cross country team on 250 yesterday in string bikinis and all trying to get carwashes.  It looked liked the cover of a playbody magazine. I can't believe Perkins administration didn't get involved in the matter, because it was inappropriate.

I buy school supplies for a friend's son, every year it is diffrent depending on the teacher. This year they have added a Flash drive, and a Texas instrument calculator. It ios expensive forpeople with large families to get the supplies"required".

Did hear of one teacher who had the kids buy 1 extra of everything on their list to put in a box for those kids who cannot afford to buy supplies. That is a double expense for some, and some get off not buying at all.

When my Mom taught school, she spent a lot of her own money to buy supplies, and then if a child did not have something it was there for them. She would be amazed by the lists kid's have today. Paper and pencils were the basic's back in the day. No calculators, we used our fingers and toes.

Schools need to pay attention to their budget just as families have to.  They want more and more each year from parents.  I think this is to make voters pass those levys....  There's a lot of waste in schools.  We all have to tighten our belts.   I bet we could spend a day at school and find out just how much tax money is wasted...  I think everyone would be surprised !   There's another thing Ohio could do during a couple of weeks before school starts.  Have a week that no sales tax is collected on school supplies, and clothing and shoes.  I heard Florida does this.  It would help families save a little on these items.  Every penny helps.

I saw a news article on TV and it was said that schools are not only asking for a $40.00 plus student fee but are being required to buy kleenex, clorox wipes, baby wipes, and even toilet paper.  YES each student is required to bring in a 4 roll pack of toilet paper.  Maybe this is how the schools and the state are balancing their budgets.  Makes me wonder what they are doing with the money!!!

I don't spend  $600.00 on my kid ,getting him ready for " back to school".  That is a ridiculous amount of money. Where does the average family shop?

What is   "average"   family, anymore?    $606.40  for each kid?   Or just one?

Don't know how people can afford it ?    I don't envy them a bit  nowadays.
