TODAY (Sunday, May 24)

SANDUSKY

Erie County Veterans Memorial Park Committee annual Memorial day services, 2 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, 265 Jackson St. Dedication of the Vietnam Memorial follows in Veterans Park. Erie County lost 29 men in the war, and each will be recognized. Family  members or representatives will be asked to step up to receive floral offerings to be placed at the Memorial. Speaker is Sen. Mark D. Wagoner, a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee. Benediction by the Rev. Phi Feltman, music by Judy Mears and the Vacationland Band. George Mylander, park chair, will preside. Ohio Veterans Home Firing Squad will salute the dead, and taps will be played by Aaron Hixson and Luke Widman, Sandusky High School band.

MONROEVILLE

The Color Guard of Sch-Loe-Man Post 547 of the American Legion will participate at 7 p.m. in the annual Lyme Township Memorial Program at Lyme Grange on  U.S. 20.

VERMILION

The Vermilion Veterans Council will host Memorial Day Services at 2 p.m. at Volunteer Bay. Services will take place at 3 p.m. at Chappel Creek and 3:45 p.m. at Old Lake Road Cemetery. Services will be at 4:30 p.m. at Vermilion High School for the 22 servicemen from Vermilion who gave their lives for their country. Parade lineup begins at 1:30 p.m. at the corner of North Ridge and South Claus Roads.  Parade begins at 1:45 p.m., marching to Brownhelm Cemetery at Sunnyside and North Ridge roads. Services at 2 p.m. Bring a lawn chair. Residents are encouraged to join the parade. The Brownhelm Historical Association will honor Revolutionary War soldier Bildad Belden at  4 p.m. at the Old Lake Road Cemetery just east of MacKenzie Woods apartments.

GREEN SPRINGS

Green Springs Community Association Memorial Day Celebration, Green Springs Community Park. VFW Ladies Auxiliary breakfast 7-9:30 a.m., open to the public. Civil War flag-raising ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Open Civil War church service, 10:30 a.m. at the gazebo. Civil War battle, 1:30 p.m. Bands play throughout the day. Parade lines up 3 p.m. at the firehouse and steps off at 3:30 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 4 p.m. at the cemetery Speaker is Sen. Karen Gillmor with music by the Town Band. Ending party at the park.

 

MILAN

The flags in the Village Square will be retired.

LAKESIDE

The Salvation Army ‘Chapel Brass’ will perform selections from their repertoire at

10:30 a.m. in the Hoover

Worship Service at Hoover  Auditorium and a full concert at 3:15 p.m. at Lakeside’s Steele Memorial Bandstand in Central Park (no gate fee). In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to Hoover Auditorium.

MEMORIAL DAY

Ohio Veterans Home/

Oakland Cemetery

Services begin with a 9 a.m. ceremony at the Ohio Veterans Home, in front of the I. F. Mack Building.  Immediately following the ceremony, the annual parade will step off down U.S. 250 and end at Oakland Cemetery. John Kustec, Perkins High School, is celebrating his 30th Memorial Day parade as band director, with

Perkins High School being the lead band. A ceremony at the cemetery will commence after the parade has concluded, at about 11 a.m.  Student speakers at the Oakland ceremony will be Audriana Broughton, Perkins High School; Aaron Hixson, Sandusky High School and Rachel Bourne, Sandusky Central Catholic.

 BERLIN HEIGHTS

A parade will form on Main Street at 8:30 a.m. and step off at 9 a.m., proceed to Riverside Cemetery, then to the Veterans Memorial in the park on Memorial Drive. Marchers include members of American Legion Post 659, Sons of the Legion, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Fire Department, Berlin-Milan Middle School Band, Edison Marching Band, veterans and members of the armed forces. Speaker is American Legion Post 659 chaplain, the Rev. Don Lautzenheiser.

MILAN

Colors will be posted at

6:30 a.m. on the square,

followed by ceremonies at Bloomville and St. John’s cemeteries.

A parade from the square to Milan Cemetery will begin at about 11 a.m. Following the ceremony, the parade will march back to the Milan Village Square. There is a luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 :30 p.m. at the Milan Presbyterian Church.

HURON

AMVETS Post 49 will conduct flag-raising services at 9 a.m. at McCormick School’s

Veterans Memorial on Ohio Street. Memorial Day reflection and prayer follows at 9:30 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial in Scott’s Cemetery on Huron-Avery Road and at 10:30 a.m. at the

Veterans Memorial on Main Street. Speaker is Rick Gundlach with prayers led by the Rev. Clair Brewer.

CASTALIA

Parade lines up at 9:15 a.m. at the fire station on South Street. Decorated bicycles and vehicles are welcome to participate.

 Parade stops at the Lions Club Veterans Memorial and duck pond for laying of wreaths and prayer. Services at Castalia Cemetery at  10 a.m. include a reading of the “What Memorial Day Means to Me” by Thomas Neill, Women’s Relief Corps 275 scholarship winner.

VERMILION

Veterans will meet at the American Legion at 7 a.m., followed by services at Exchange Park at

8 a.m. to lower the flag to half staff and place the wreath. Veterans will form at Maple Grove to lower the flag to half mast and to place the wreath. Parade begins at 10 a.m. on Ferry Street. At

 11 a.m. a ceremony will take place at Victory Park.

 

MONROEVILLE

Memorial Day Parade assembles at 9:45 a.m. at Monroeville High School and proceed to

Commons Park for music, raising of the flag and services.

 WILLARD

Parade forms at 9:30 a.m. at West Pearl and Dale streets and steps off at 10 a.m. and  proceeds to Willard cemetery on Ohio 99. Lunch follows the Ceremonies at the Willard VFW.

BELLEVUE

Parade will assemble at 9 a.m. at Bellevue Junior High School and step off at 9:30 a.m. and go to Bellevue Cemetery for a memorial service. Speaker is the Rev. Bruce Kent. The junior high school and high school bands will play. In case of inclement weather, the service will be at the junior high.

CLYDE

Parade assembles at 9 a.m. at Main and Forest streets and steps off at 10 a.m. then proceeds from Main Street to Buckeye Street, George Street, Maple Street, Spring Street to St. Mary’sCemetery, then Spring Street, to Maple Street, across McPherson Highway to McPherson Cemetery for ceremony.

 

PUT-IN-BAY

Graveside dedication at noon at Maple Leaf Cemetery, antique car parade at 2 p.m., picnic at 6 p.m., at the state park pavilion.

NORWALK

Flag-raising ceremony with veterans organizations color guards at Woodlawn Cemetery at

8 a.m. Parade forms at 9 a.m. at the bus garage on Woodlawn Avenue and steps off at

9:30 a.m., proceeds to Woodlawn Cemetery for services. Lunch follows at the Norwalk American Legion.

LAKESIDE-MARBLEHEAD

Parade begins at 10:30 a.m. at Wesley Lodge, 150 Central Ave., and travels north on Central Avenue to Second Street then to Maple Avenue and ends at Central Park. Services are at the War Memorial located in front of the Lakeside Pavilion.
