SANDUSKY

St. Mary Central Catholic High School students and resident artists are teaming up to raise money for the Humane Society of Erie County and Hermes Dairy Farm.

Kate Gorman and Patty Mitchell are both resident artists with the Ohio Arts Council and have spent the last couple weeks at the high school helping students transform pictures of their cats and dogs into quilts.

The art students brought in pictures of their pets which they enlarged, traced onto fusible web cloth and ironed onto a square of fabric.

At least one of the quilts made from the cat and dog squares will be donated to the Humane Society, which it can use to raise money.

The students are also making a cow-themed quilt to help raise money for Hermes Dairy Farm. They are considering having a raffle to raise money.

Gorman said the art project gives the students a chance to do more than just build their portfolio with the quilts.

The students will make about 60 squares total which will equal around five to seven quilts. Gorman said she hopes the other quilts will be displayed in the community.
