VERMILION TWP.

A man who told sheriff's deputies he was off-roading Saturday evening or Sunday morning drove his truck into a deep creek.

Sheriff's deputies cited Jeffery A. Thayer, 27, 500 block of Main St. in Vermilion, with reckless operation of a vehicle for allegedly driving his truck through a harvested soybean field and eventually into a rising creek sometime Saturday night or Sunday morning, according to a sheriff's report.

A deputy found the truck during patrol Sunday morning and called a tow truck driver to remove it form the creek. The tow truck driver told the deputy he had been called already to remove the truck and that the driver told him he swerved to miss a deer. The tow truck driver told the deputy he did not think to call law enforcement because it was a deer-related accident.

An inspection showed the truck had driven though the field for a "considerable distance," according to the report. It appeared no evasive action had been taken, the report read.

Thayer told the deputy he had been traveling at about 45 mph.
